"Look up and Paddle Hard" by Gabriel Omin (Sharing and Reflections moments)

"Look up and Paddle Hard" is a narrative piece of writing, depicting hard work and diligence as mechanics for success. The narrative piece also implies that learning is both on-going as well as a life-long process. As the author put at halt his learning to cycle effort in 1988, he stopped making any progress in riding, thinking that he would forever be unable to ride a bicycle. A turning point took place in 1955 when he once again decided to acquire riding skills with the help of his friend, Aniefiok Enoh. This also signifies that support and encouragement from people around you are equally significant with self-driven motivation in cultivating persistence and diligence during learning process. Very often, most learners are advised to uphold positive beliefs in ensuring endurance to achieve success and famous proverbs such as "No pain no gain" and "To err is human" have become a common learning creed.

I think my comment can be a little quite boring but I will try and make it more interesting. At first when i fininshed the text "Look up and Paddle Hard" by the all known writer Gabriel Omin(I think), I being getting a flashback of when I start riding a bicycle. It is a sad and (I don't know what to say) moment. I have prepared a note for that but when during the presentation I have remembered my other learning experience. That is the time when I starting to draw a manga( comic in Japan ). I like this memory because it is an funny story. I don't know how to draw a manga but I always try and end up with using stickman( the person with 1 fishball as head and 5 stick as body). At that time I always get laugh by my friends but that didn't bother me, I still love manga. Sadly in the end I still couldn't draw a manga and I have almost give up on it. But after seeing this text, I feel like I can continued to do it eventhought I kept failing. But by now I can trace the drawing of any anime and some cartoon or anything that can be draw but I still can't fininshed the face and hand of the character. But I willl still keep trying my best to do it. I hereby thanks Miss Angel for the text which give me back my inspiration. The words that people always say "Failure is the first step to Success".

"look up and paddle hard" reminds me of my past styles of learning attitude. The narrator was very ignorant and lacking humble qualities back when he was a kid. He chosed to ignore the wise words of his buddy just because he thought of him as a village guy.I was once like that, but now it's another different story. That is because now I always learn from the heart, that is to love what I learn.I love to cook, and this is what I actually hated to do four years ago. I thought of it as of no concern in my life and when my mother got me to help her in the kitchen,I protested vaguely. For the first few times I work in the kitchen, it was frustrating, but gradually i learnt that knowing how to cook is one of the ways to gain independancy in life(I am an independant man for most of the time). therfore, i switched my attitude and now i am quite an accomplished cooker, though i can only manage the more simple cuisines. I am talented in drawing as well, and guess what, i never appreciate that particular talent until i was in secondary school. My comics, which was drawn by me because i was merely jaded, was immensely popular among my classmates. That inspires me to love drawing and draw more because i never knew that drawing could actually bring joy to anyone at all. Miraculously, my skills improved so drastically that I could hardly believe that. Finally, I wanted to convince all the other viewers of this blog page that love is an important ingredient in our learning process. So if we want to make a sucess for what we learn, add a little love, and it WILL make the differences!!!

Hi James,

I believe it was not miracles that turned you into a multi-skilled person, but it's the learning passion!

I think this passage is actually reflecting the real situation of the process of learning in our lives. In the 1st paragraph, the writer rode his tricycle with all the gusto in the heart of a kid and this shows our enthusiasm to learn a thing when we are still very young. However, when the writer found that the paddling aspect of riding was hard work and tedious,he always needed help from others to push him. This shows the importance of encouragement when we meet with challenges but on the other hand,we should not be too dependant on others in our studies. We must also not hesitate to seek advice and do not find excuse in the process of learning.Instead,we should learn from our past failures and overcome the weakness and finally,we will enjoy the fruit of hardwork.Actually,we start to learn when we are born and we never stop learning till the end of our life. Therefore, learning will never be late.Believe you can do it and you will do it!

After reading the passage entitled 'Look Up And Paddle Hard'by Gabriel Omin ,I feel that I quite admire at the writer's learning behavior. He reminds me that the age is not the hindrance for us to learn a technique. I also very agree with Ms Angel said that learning is a lifelong process.Through my life ,I just pick up a virtual example that related to my learning part. Firstly, I did not really care about my acedemic results when I studied at the primary school.Fortunately, I did not get any subject fail in the UPSR examination. I was studied at the afternoon section when I was in the secondery school.I felt very embarrass because my friend in the morning section seem to be more clever and better than me in their studies.I tried to study very hard to gain more knowledge .I faced a lot of failures on the learning process. Even I faced failures, I did not regret . I learn from my mistakes. At the end of the year, I really did achieve a result that enable me to go to the morning section.Even ,I am not the top in the class, I still obtain the result that I want to reach my score. Eventually, I conclude that we must try to do the thing that we have not do before, if we want to attain success.Don't mention your failures, if you want to succeess.

Fair: I agree with you, failure should be a learning insipiration!

after reading the article, i tried to think of any interesting learning experince it seemed that mine were very common so i decided to share my views on learning. learning is the process whereby you identify your obstacles, face them and lastly, overcome them. thus, not let these difficulties put you down. believe that you can do it and you will do it. those that seemed impossible will become achievable. setting your goals and determine to do something will definitely benefit you in a long run.

According to "Look Up and Paddle Hard" written by Gabriel Omin. From this topic,it let I remind back my previous hard memory. While I'm in secondary school,I've learning piano. From the beginning,my mum bring me to learn it but i doesn't like it so much because I like to join outdoor's activities such like basketball, volleyball, swimming and so on. With no choice,I stil need to learn piano with caring by mum every week. After a part of time, i starting to keep playing piano as a hobby but the thing I most hate is have to sit for the exam to upgrate my level. In the 1st exam,I was failed it and I'm so disappointed. My mum not only didn't blajme me but is always encourage me to sit the test for second time. I passed my life with scaring failed in piano exam in a part of time while i still consider to retake or not. Finally, i decide to retake the piano exam for second time and hopefully'll pass it. When the result came out,I was so nervous and think'll failed it once again but the fact is I pas it with a good result after have a hard practice and prepared. Hence, I've to thanks a lot to my parents because both of them spent a lot of money on me and always encourage me no matter what i do. So,I've to say to all of you that "nothing is impossible to success in our precious life"! Thank you! (",)

The passage "Look Up and Paddle Hard"by Gabriel Omin is about experience on learning tricycle. So,I would like to share with all of you my experience on learning how to drive a car.I think most of you will start to learn driving when 17 years old.My driving skill was really poor.I always forgot to fasten my seat belt when driving.Besides,I also used the wrong "gear" which made my car stopped on the way and the car behind me will hon at me.It was so embarrassing. But,the most terrible and dangerous thing was that I never learn to use the brek. Therefore,I always stopped my car immediately and suddenly. This was what my driving instuctor always advised me not to do.Luckily,I managed to pass my driving exam.I think I can pass it was because the help and blessing from God.Eventhough I managed to pass the test,I still need to practice hard to improve my driving skill as what people always say "Success is a journey, not a destination."

according to my written note:

I dont remember when this happened, but I do remember what my age was,and it was below 10.Thats how far i could remember it.Well,my speech is also related to bicycle riding.By the way, what do you call a bicycle with two extra wheels at the back?but first, what made me rode a bicycle was because of my parents, they told me that it would be useful in the future. So lets move on,the four wheeled bicycle is the only bicycle I ever rode on,but I guess bicycle riding isnt my thing, because I would still fall off with extra support. So I kept falling and falling and falling until one point where I gave up on bicycle. So until today,I have friends asking me if I wanted to go for some bicycle ride, and I always replied back saying I cant ride a bicycle. So I guess thats about it,on the bicycle side of things, maybe today or someday, I will "Look Up and Paddle Hard"

After the reading of "Look up and Paddle Hard" by Gabriel Omin, memories of learning in my life came up.There was learning how to ride, learning how to swim, learning how to play the piano, learning mathematics and not forgettting some other uncountables learning experiences.Life is short and we're to live it to the fullest.Learning's one of them.I can still remember the day in primary two after school after stepping into the car with my mother announcing "PIANO LESSONS!!",I was mortified and yet having the feeling of excitement.Being a kid,all we want to do is just to have fun one of them was me.So in all those piano lessons,it was just like a happy-go-lucky game, and managing to fail my first exam was truly embarassing, needing onli a few marks to pass. However,my mother did not scold me yet she encouraged me even more giving me support.Determined to set my feet on the ground ,I worked hard and successfully passed my grade 1 exam.I was thrilled. Then when I was in primary six my mother promised me to get me a piano if I do well in my exams. And I did.So years after years still hating those piano lessons,I worked hard and managed to upgrade my grade one year after another. And I was stuck in Grade 5 as it was the last year of me being in Brunei.Till now,I am still not ready to finish up my grades but I know one day if I don't continue it I'll regret. So maybe Ms.Angel I might begin to start playing again :)BECAUSE Life's too short :P

After reading this passage, I found that i have a lot of these learning experience. One of my experience is my driving experience that i have shared last Wednesday. I started to learn how to drive when i was 18 years old. But i stopped learning for few months because I feel scare about it. My master always phone me and force me to continue my lesson. I passed my driving test in July (7 month I learn how to drive, it's quite long time). I really don't know how I passed it and I really can't believe i passed it. After that, I didn't drive anymore. Last month, I decide to study in Curtin, then my parent force me to drive because I have to drive to school. I feel scare about it. Not much time that I learn driving on road, I drive to school. But I didn't drive to school alone because I still scare. Last Tuesday, I drive to school alone. It's quite special experience to me and I'm in a ecstasy of delight because I managed to drive school alone. I still learning about it, and I still a little bit scare driving. Words that outside topic, write a comment here is quite difficult for me. Because I'm not confident with my English and I'm very strong in "net language". Sometimes I almost forget how's the original word spell and my grammar is poor. So, this is another thing that I try to learn.

When I finish read the article with the title "Look Up And Paddle Hard" by Gabriel Omin, I had found that there 4 main problem that the author face when the author try to ride the bicycle which is same as in our learning. This article has reminded me when I was young to learning the knitting from my sister which needs a lot of patient. If u doesn’t have patient, u feel that knitting is a boring job but for those who like it will become an interesting and fun job. I found that that knitting is fun because the effort that put on it will make something useful to me and other people. Besides that knitting also need sharp eye and skill, this is because we need to count and realize the mistake that we at the beginning. I knitting day by day, I also found that there is self improvement in the job that we done. When I was beginner in learning knitting, I had faced a lot of challenge such as miss in count, no experience, mentally stressful and many more. I had also wanted to give up at the beginning because other can do more beautiful than I do. But my family has given me full support and teaches me how I can handle my challenge and stress. They also tell me that don’t let the challenge to stop you at the middle but let it be your courage to move forward and seeking solution to the problem that we might face everyday. Knitting is suitable for all age because we are learning not only the knitting skill from other but also the experience that share among us. So knitting cannot say that only for the old folks. Sometime we may face that not have enough time to complete our task or job, therefore knitting is a good hobby to train us about time managing. I may need to arrange my time not only for study but also for the hobby I like most – knitting. Finally as my family say: Don’t let failure be your excuse escape from learning something new and enjoy the moment!!!.... ^o^

Thanks for Ms Angel gave this article 'Look up and paddle hard'. by Gabriel Omin to us. From this article, I have learned a lot. I am very appreciate on the writer's character. He was displayed his backbone and he tried his best to learn how to ride the tricycle. To be honestly, I wasn't played well in my piano when I was a child. Firstly because of my perseverance was not enough. Secondly because I'm a left-hander. My parents always look down on my left hand and they said that it can't do well in all the jobs. When I was studying at secondary school, I was very interested on playing violin. So, I told my parent that I want to learn playing violin. However, they started to despise my left hand. Finally, I was not allowed to learn playing violin. They said that it just waste the money. They always applaud my handwriting is good even though they always look down on my left hand. Yesterday I went to the gospel center. The info which presented by the priest was God have already obliged from ability to different people. So, we must use it properly and try our best to exert it. In conclusion, we must try our best to do our jobs and meet all the challenges in the whole life so that we will not regret when we get old.

Thank, Ms Angel. I am grateful after reading "Look Up And Paddle Hard" and it is really much appreciated. of course, when I just started to learn Wushu, I was the worst among all of my friends. Everyone laughed at me. but I never give up. After a few years, I had been selected to join Sarawak Wushu Team and compete in high-level championship. Dear friends, success is driven by forces of life. Let's work together to reach greater heights.

I still remember the incident that occurred when i was 14 years old. I took part in a competition that was organised by Red Crescent society. My fiends and I were in a group and we practised hard in order to win the competition. Unfortunately, we were too proud and we thought that we would sure be the winner of the competition. Therefore, we started to find excuses to escape the practices as we were too confident to win the competition. And finally, we lost in the competition. Since that, we told ourselves not to be proud anymore and we would like to take part again in the following year. We changed our attitude of learning and practised alot. In the end, we succeed. We got the champion for the competition. From the incident, I know that we should learn from the mistake and not look down people like the author looked down at the village boy.

After finish reading 'Look Up and Paddle Hard' written by Gabriel Omin.I would like to share my experience of learning swimming, when i was young, about 8 years old my parent brought me to the nearby swimming pool. When i arrive at there i saw many people swimming at there, they look enjoy and relax. At that time i feel envy of them because i did't know how to swim and i did't intend to take any swimming course because i scare laught by the public. That time I had make a wrong decision,I feel regret of it.Last year 2006 after my SPM exam i decide to learn swimming. So i went to my swimming club to looking for a 'teacher',at there i saw many foreign both of them can swim well even the aged,so i belive that i also can swim well just like them. After 3 week of learning, training sweet are the fruits of labor,i success to reach my target, althought i drunk a lot of 'swimming pool water' but i think it is be worth.

"look up and paddle hard" reminds me the day i started to learn how to ride a bicycle. If i am not mistaken, i was 12 yrs old that time. It really gave me a hard time that time with injuries everywhere as i always fall down from the bicycle. I didnt giv up when i fall down from the bicycle. I kept on trying till one day i really successed. I was really happy that time and i remember i kept on riding bicycle after i know how to ride a bicycle. What i learn from this reminder was jus like wat cyen said "Failure is the first step to success". Sorry if i got some grammar mistake as my english isn't that good. In class, sometime also got problems in understanding what Miss Angel trying to say (not totally don't know is jus a small part of it) but I will try my best to get what she tryin to say.
