this is the first time that i write the comment. If there is any grammar mistake, please kindly to forgive me. Now I'm trying very hard to improve my English. Today, we have a class for critical reading strategic. After reading those 7 strategic, although it's look easy but there have the difficulty such as to fight against the laziness and more. Anyway, i really hope that i can remember them in my mind and apply them in my study.
Thank you.

Having to understand all those 7 strategies is hard.Trying to become a critical reader is even harder.Previewing a text is easy,we are to just flip through the pages without really looking at the text or just like a movie trailer, watching only bits of the show in order to determined whether it's good or bad.And in contextualizing, from past backgrounds of ourselves, understanding is very important.Recognizing words for their meanings is one of them.Questioning the text with what ,why, how, when etc is a way to become a better reader. While reading the text,by summarizing we can get a clearer picture on what we are reading which always begins with outlining important facts.Through evaluating an argument we can oppose the idea of the author or his/her judgment.Lastly,we have to compare it to relating texts and try to discuss it with others on that particular text.Hopefully,I might be able to use all these strategies for my next upcoming book i'm going to read :D
-->try uploading a video by the JONAS BROTHERS-Year 3000 ;P
cheers~ [:
Critical reading strategies...oh dear...it's easy to know and understand but quite hard to make it a part of our reading habits, because it'll take uncommon determination to do so. After reading the text, it seems tough, but it's a must. I really do hope that i can make full use of it so that it'll be able to benefit me through its applications in my studies..
P.S:Thanks for t Jamiroquai video too!! I got lots of his songs in my laptop but don't seem to watch his music video all the time. Can you upload an old video named 'Pray' by Take That, Miss Angel? They're also a famous band in the UK during the mid-90's!!!!
With regards,
James(Siaw Wei):)
After going through the 7 reading strategies,i finally come to a conclusion similar to what Janice had written----it's not easy for us to understand thoroughly and apply all those 7 strategies in our reading. The reason is we may lack of time to apply all the strategies in our studying nowadays especially in certain circumstances like during the period of exam or when we are very busy with our homework or studies.Another problem is the limited knowledge of vocabulary which make me unable to read and understand a text faster or in a very short time.Anyway,I think trying to apply all those strategies is an important step to become a critical reader.I should try my best to overcome all those challenges in order to become a critical reader.
Hi all! Thanks for the reflective comments on the 7 critical reading strategies... well, knowing and grasping the concepts are always more feasible than adapting them to our own reading strategies!
James: If you could kindly copy all of your Jamiroquai songs for me please, if that's possible? I will see what I can do about "pray" by Take That. Cheers!
well,i'm not good in english(grammar & vocab).........however i managed to catch up the strategies during the tuesday class.i think they are easy to understand in text but not all of them are very easy to apply in real life.
About the 7 strategies of reading...hmm...to understand these strategies is a bit hard for me but to apply these strategies, I think will b very difficult for me as I think I only can apply some of it but not all...anywhere I will try my best to use these strategies...
Erm...I agreed with what my friends had mention that this 7 strategies is very easy to understand, but it is really hard for me to apply it during my reading time.
Before I taking Critical Thinking 061 this unit, I totally do not know there are such things exist. When I read, I just simply read through and did not care much more about what I had read. Now then I know the important of using this strategies. I hope I can use to it and hope that with this strategies will help me in improving my poor reading and my English as well.

After reading the 7 stragies, I absolutely agree that it is very helpful in our sturdies. Sometimes, I will preview the text before I go through the whole passage in more detail. On the other hand ,it not my habit to contextualise the text before I go through it. It is because I think that without knowing the author , I will still undertstand the text. But, I find out that if I have some information about author I will more understand about the material. It happened when I was in form 4, when my English teacher inform us about the background of the poet of a poem. By knowing the information about the poet ,I will understand the idea delivers by the poet.I could only apply some of the strategies in my studies until moment, perhaps I could cope all of it soon
After Miss Angel explain the 7 strategic for us, I feel that I very hard to fill the strategic because I'm very poor in english language and have a lot of grammer mistake.Beside that, I'm weak in vocabulary and always not understanding the deep words in the passages. However, I'll study hard little bit to improve my english grammer and vocabulary to apply a satisfy result to show to my family that I can do it.
Thank You. (",)
Just as Miss Angel wish, I will post my comment slow and short(to allow brainburn I think). From what I know the 7 strategics are quite helpful, because I had tried some of it and it work. Well eventhought it is useful but the difficult part is to live with it.(well thats my point of view). One reason is that I a lazy bun(hehe, even I also admit it), the second is that my mind is always changing, it will not stay at one idea for long( meaning it keep changing) ,aiya, now I don't know what I want to write again. *State of thinking* ok I back. Now that I mentioned it, I also sometime have a lost of memory( forget what I do yesterday). But will eventually remember after time past. Now the third reason is I can't remember all the strategics, just some of the easy one(e.g previewing) when I read. Well I think thats all I gonna say. For more detail : thats none.

Sorry for the double, no I mean triple post. Hand mistake again.
i love reading but the unfamiliar words really making my head spin and spoiling my interest to the book especially there are too many of them in a page.It makes me feel like understanding the thoughts & ideas of author is an even harder task to accomplish.Looking for dictionary isn't a good way to learn new words (i think) because i always forget about it right after i closed the book or in day 2.(because i'm too lazy to flip over the passage again where i wrote the meanings)
After reading those 7 strategies,I manage to understand them. However,it is hard for me to apply them in my study.Anyway,I will try my very best to apply them in my study as I know that the 7 strategies study skills are very useful and it will make my study become easier especially during the exam time.
Critical reading skills is very useful but i think i can't fully understand what is been taught. Beside that, those skills are too many and i can't apply it effectively.Normally i'm a lazy person and seldom do any homework. To succeed,i understand that i need to overcome my bad habit and challenge myself for better improvement. thus, i will put in more effort in order to catch up the syllabus.
The Strategies are helpful but not all are practical. Though it is very helpful it does have some disadvantages too.
It can be time consuming to browse through dictionaries, whereas you could just look at the word given in the text to analize its meaning.
Questioning the text about itself will be helpful and will give us more information about the topic.
The strategies are effective for understanding yet not feasable for emergency studies.
Summarising the text also helps a student to retrieve the key aspects of the text.
To be a critical reader one has to practise applying the strategies in their studies, so that the strategies becomes effective, even if they are hard to apply them.

After we had read through all those 7 strategies, we found that those steps are really helpful in understanding a text deeply either for us as students or anyone who will come across any text in his life.
For the first step of previewing, it is quite a important step that we must do before we read into the text.Previewing a text is mainly just to give us a rough idea on what the text is about. While for the contextualizing step,we have to differentiate between our own past experience and the exact attitudes represented in the text.
Besides that, when we read, we cannot read just for the sake of reading, but we have to question in order to understand the text more thoroughly. Then,we also have to come out with the outlining and summarizing to understand the main idea of the text. Moreover,we have to come out with the arguement, whether to agree or disagree. Lastly, we have to relate the text to the other readings as to know an issue in a different way.
But the problem is that, do we really apply those strategies as our reading habit?Anyway, we all hope that we can try our best to apply it to become critical readers.
Kitty, Ai Ting and Candy say,
First of all, the three of us have different levels of understanding towards the text given. We, working as a group try to have a better understanding in the meaning of critical reading by communicating and voicing out our problems we encounter throughout the text.Previewing is actually a pretty simple task as you just have to read the headlines and the subtopics to get the gist of the whole text. What we find difficult to do is contextualizing the text.We tend to ignore the historical and cultural background of the story. We simply just read a text because it contents is humourous/interesting/useful for our future use or worse yet, just because. After reading the 7 strategies,we believe that by being more inquisitive we will gain more knowledge and understand the text better.By having a deeper understanding,it will be easier for us to memorize and remember facts for our general knowledge. All of us have agreed that once we memorize a text that we fully understand,it will be stored in our long term memory. What we can interpret from the fourth strategy is that we have to look at every side of the story and not be easily influenced by the author's point of view.We also have to compare our own beliefs to the authour's.Other than that, outlining and summarizing is rather a simple task for the three of us. We often use this strategy in our learning experience. We don't use it all the time but sometimes, it helps a little. To be truthful, it takes up too much time that we actually give up on summarizing. In our opinion, evaluating an argument is like, going against our own teacher/lecturer's opinion because if the teacher makes mistakes or better yet, we have a better idea than the teacher's we can bring up the topic for discussion.Last but not least, we feel that comparing and contrasting related readings is a really useful technique in critical reading as you will be able to apply what you have learnt in your daily lives. This is what makes learning experience interesting and meaningful.Thats all folks!
Thanks for Ms Angel taught us the 7 strategies. I think it is quite easy to know and understand those 7 strategies. I agreed that those strategies can help us a lot on our reading and those really work for our reading. However, it seems very hard for me to become a critical reader. Because of my laziness and lack of patience, I'm absolutely have no habits of reading. I think it is also a problem of our malaysia culture. That's why i thought that my english is not very well. Even so, i will try my best to improve my english and also to be a critical reader.
Sorry for the late post. I think i haven get use to the class, the way to learn is totally different with my previous studies . i hope i can be improved gradually as the others. The 7 reading strategics are really useful, not hard to digest. but i think its quite hard for me to apply all of them very well in my reading.. I'm quite a lazy person. But i'll still try my best. Thanks for Ms Angel too.. Hope can learn more from her...
Well, the 7 strategies of reading are not hard to understand, but to apply them in our reading habit,it could be a hard work as i am a very lazy person.Besides,i am very poor in my english grammar and vocabulary too. Therefore,i don't think i will be able to use all those 7 strategies in my reading thoguh i love reading very much. However,I promise that i will try my best to improve my reading skill and become a critical thinker by applying those 7 strategies.I hope i will be able to do it.Thanks to Ms Angel for sharing these with us.
